Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

Gazette is a totally hosted solution. The Gazette tools are available only by monthly subscription, and works on the ASP (Application Service Provision) model. The software resides on a number of servers owned and operated by Thirdfloor Software Works. Current high security backbone hosting locations are Melbourne, VIC, Australia and Herndon, VA, USA - with backup servers at the Thirdfloor offices in Sydney.

What do I get?

The core Gazette installation includes the standard set of editorial tools to add and manage content for magazines, weblogs, directories, web sites, and email newsletters. There are three industry specific database, keyword cross linking of all material, search functionality, secure members-only logins, and daily data backups. Standard installation also includes glue code for third party banner advertising and web traffic analysis software.

The basic monthly fees include a single editorial/administration login, but you can extend your team access to as many remote logins as required, including third-party and trusted partnerships.

What else will I need to use Gazette?

Just a computer with an Internet connection and a web browser. With Gazette, there is no software to install, no hardware to maintain, and the entire application runs through a web browser.

How technical do my users need to be?

Gazette was designed to be easy enough that anyone who can use email and surf the web can use Gazette.

How much does it cost?

The basic Gazette monthly fee is based on estimates of expected traffic, bandwidth, and data loads. Fees are fixed for 6 month blocks of time to help your planning, and we guarantee fixed fees during that time - it's up to us to adjust hardware and server equipment to meet your needs. If you experience a sudden upswing in traffic, we'll cover it - and give you plenty of notice before revising the ongoing costs.

If your needs are covered by our existing online tools, the only extra initial cost is to set up the databases and basic wrapper templates.

If you'd like us to take on your site architecture design, template designs, or ongoing site maintenance, then we can handle that too. Or refer you to one of our preferred web designer/developer partners.

How much can it handle?

Load tested to handle somewhere around 12 million page views a day, Gazette should be able to cover your needs. Of course, if you need more speed, bandwidth, or raw storage, we can provide optimized solutions for many of the tools, or split functionality over several dedicated servers.

Our databases are rated to 2 terabytes size. All servers are set to automatically restart. All data is backed up daily.

Is it powerful enough for my technical team to use?

Gazette is a development platform. The more advanced features of Gazette can be turned on as part of the integration process, and enable some incredibly powerful options like integration with other applications.

Is my information secure?

Your personal login to Gazette is protected by state of the art two-way security. Unlike most other systems, no passwords are ever sent “in the clear” (making it next to impossible for your access codes to be cracked). Even the Gazette programmers don’t know, and cannot use your password!

Access to databases is also through two layers of internally proxied web services. Even hacking one level still leaves a second line of defense.

Your project site is password protected and we will not sell or share your information or any data you enter. No one will be able to access your data unless you grant permission. Though we offer safeguards to protect your data, please keep in mind that we can not guarantee 100% security. Take appropriate measures with your links, passwords, and user accounts.

Your hardware is securely kept away from anyone but authorized personnel - Hardware and Data Center Information.

In the event of a catastrophic crash, you can rely on our daily offsite backups, maintained on separate networks.

What is Shipping News?

Shipping News is a fictional magazine publication - created to demonstrate Gazette in action.

Can we purchase a copy of Gazette to install on our own servers?

At this time we do not have plans to produce custom licensed copies of Gazette for remote installation.

Did you know?

... that authors spend up to fifty percent of their time on a document’s appearance instead of its content? You can as much as double the productivity of your subject matter experts by automating the publishing process and relieving them from responsibility for page layouts and design. And the savings are compounded when multichannel publishing is involved.
